Time to get on to the local twinning committee to see if we can replace Potenza Picena with Golden. While the idyllic Eastern Italian city has its charms the West Tipperary hamlet is fast becoming a very comfortable holiday home for Brackens footballers. And so it proved once again last night as we defeated last years beaten County Finalists, Ardfinnan, in Round 2 of the County Senior Football Championship. With both teams recording opening round victories this was the big one as victory assured a quarter-final spot. In a cagey opening ten mins scores were low with Shane Doyle opening our account with a sweet strike off his right boot. The South boys were dominating possession but Brackens defended with great discipline and organisation and turned them over time and again. Three points from the boot of Dean McEnroe combined with a great team goal, finished expertly to the net by Doyle after a great pass from McEnroe, gave Brackens a 1-4 to 0-2 interval lead. Brackens gave away no scoreable free in the opening half. With the breeze behind them John Evans men got the opening two points of the second half and it was game on. The game-breaker came shortly after however as Cathal Scully swooped on a loose ball and gave the keeper no chance with a bullet into the corner for our second major and a half dozen lead. (2-4 to 0-4). Brackens grew in confidence after that kicking four of the next six points to pull eight clear and seal the deal. This was an excellent team performance from the lads characterised by discipline, organisation and a great appetite to regain possession at all times. The result means we now top the group irrespective of results in the last round and will play a group runner-up in the County quarter final. Back to the Caman now as we head for Holycross on Sunday to take on the Kings of Cashel. Final score: JK Brackens 2-8 Ardfinnan 0-9.
