Well done to our U-14 hurlers who put in a fine display in Borrisoleigh this afternoon as they defeated North Champions Ballina on a 4-8 to 0-6 scoreline. Brackens played against the strong wind in the opening half but their superior work rate ensured that the North Champions were never allowed to settle on the ball. And when they did get ball in hand they were wasteful with an amount of ball drifting harmlessly over both the sideline and the endline. Scores were slow to come - Jamie Ormond opening our account with two points. And when the ball broke in his favour in the tenth minute Jamie ran right through the centre to land our first major. Playing with a two-man full forward line was proving effective with Ciaran O'Shea and Cian Sheedy winning a plentiful supply of ball. A great ball in from Jamie broke off Sheedy and landed at the feet of Kyle Whelan who made no mistake to land our second goal. Ciaran O'Shea showed a lovely touch of skill to flick a ball over the bar as Brackens led 2-4 to 0-2 at the break. With the strong wind behind them Brackens never looked in trouble in the second half with all six backs well on top of the Ballina forwards. Jack Marnell, Aodhna Barrett and Josh Quinlan controlled the middle third. The forwards worked well as a unit creating two excellent team goals in the second half which were finished to the net by Whelan and O'Shea. And while not on the scoresheet today Cian Sheedy and Sean Purcell worked very hard to win possession and in doing so created space and scores for others - a vital ingredient in any team. So its on to County Final day - a great day in any players career where we face either Mullinahone or Arravale Rovers who do battle tomorrow. (Sun). Let's hope they can achieve what no other team in the parish has ever done and bring home a County U-14 A hurling title. The whole parish is behind ye. Brackens Abu.
