Our Senior footballers had a comfortable 5-11 to 1-8 victory over Rockwell Rovers in tonight's opening round of the County Senior football championship. Despite the final score the opening half was keenly contested with last years Intermediate champions well up for the battle. They landed the opening point within eleven seconds and fought tooth and nail for every scrap. Brackens were under pressure but Jack Kennedy's eight minute goal gave us some respite. However that was to be Brackens only score before the first water break with Rockwell adding two more points to level matters. Another point had them one ahead before a Dean McEnroe penalty restored Brackens advantage. Jack Kennedy followed up with a point from play before Eanna McBride intercepted a poor kickout to land our third goal. Rockwell were then reduced to 14 men but rallied with a point from play followed by an Alan Moloney goal from a penalty. Eanna McBride had the final say of the half with a point from play to leave an unusual half-time score of 3-2 to 1-5. Rockwell's numerical disadvantage dictated the pattern of play for the second half as Brackens dominated throughout. Further goals from Kennedy and McBride along with points from Paddy Cadell (2), McBride, Shane Doyle and Kennedy (5) rounded off a fine 5-11 to 1-8 victory. In the groups other game Loughmore defeated Killenaule and both winners will now clash in Round 2.
