Our Intermediate footballers recorded their second win of the campaign as they saw off the stubborn challenge of Clonoulty/Rossmore at the Ragg on Sunday afternoon last. Played in beautiful afternoon sunshine Brackens were never fully comfortable on the scoreboard while on the other hand they never really looked like losing this game. Scores were at a premium early on with Martin Bergin and James Corcoran recording the only two points of the opening quarter. The low-scoring trend continued after the first water break with Jack Nevin adding a lone point for Brackens while Clonoulty final got off the mark after twenty minutes and added another soon after to leave Brackens 0-3 to 0-2 ahead at the short whistle. While clearly the better footballing side Brackens were finding it difficult to break down a physically tough Clonoulty side. They needed inspiration after the break and it duly arrived when a great team move saw Jack Nevin slip inside the defence to land the opening goal. James Corcoran quickly followed with a pointed free and it looked like Brackens might pull away. But the men from the West had other ideas and landed three points from play to a sole reply from a Corcoran free to leave just three points between the sides at 1-5 to 0-5. The crucial score came just before the second water break when James Corcoran tucked away a penalty to send Brackens six clear. That took the wind out of the Clonoulty sails as Brackens saw out the final quarter with relative ease. Further points from play from Jack Nevin and Dylan Moloney secured a 2-7 to 0-6 victory. With four points in the bag we are now guaranteed a last eight spot ahead of our final group game with Borrisokane.
